How big is an elephant?

That is a very good question. And the answer depends on what sort of elephant you are talking about. There are two different kinds of elephants in the world. They are the African elephant and the Asian elephant.

Elephants are the biggest animals on land. Baby elephants can weigh up to 120kg when they are born.

African Elephants

African elephants are the bigger of the two different types of elephant. They have larger ears than Asian elephants and are much bigger too. They male (boy) and female (girl) elephants both have tusks as well.

Male African elephants grow up to 4m high and some can weigh up to 4.5 tonnes. The female elephants can grow up to 3m high.

Asian Elephants

Asian elephants are smaller than African elephants. They have smaller ears as well and are more hairy. Only the male (boy) Asian elephants have tusks.

Male Asian elephants can grow up to about 3.4m and weigh in at 5.4 tonnes.
